Here’s an album that will get any holiday party moving. From the full-throttle salsa of the opening “Jingle Bells” (featuring saxophonist Ed Calle, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and pianist Jim Gasior) to the grooving “Feliz Navidad” (with percussionist and singer Pete Escovedo and guitarist Ray Obiedo) that closes the album, A Not So Silent Night succeeds as both an upbeat holiday release and a fine introduction to some of the best Latin Jazz artists now playing. The acclaimed conga player and bandleader Pancho Sanchez puts a beat behind “What Child Is This” and “Have Yourself a “Merry Little Christmas”; the Caribbean Jazz Project (featuring vibist Dave Samuels, guitarist Steve Khan, and flautist Dave Valentin)adds spice to “Angels We Have Heard on high” and “Silent Night”; while Sheila E. perks up “Santa Baby,” among other reworked standards. Throughout, vibrant instrumental performances and clever arrangements make this an album that you’ll want to revisit throughout the season, as well as in the coming new year.
